CaHRU at Working for Health 2030: Building Health Workforce Leadership Seminar Series

Prof Niro Siriwardena presented on ‘Ensuring a diverse primary care medical workforce’ on 13 March 2023 at the second international seminar on Building Health Workforce Leadership Working for Health 2030 hosted by Health Education England (HEE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). WHO and HEE are working in collaboration to develop the next generation of Human Resources for Health (HRH) system leaders, creating a lasting impact and strengthening health systems globally. The programme, consists of four quarterly seminars which aim to improve population health outcomes through interventions to strengthen the health workforce, considering practical solutions and actions towards health system strengthening in local contexts by creating the space for participants to engage in in-depth discussions, peer problem-solving and peer learning. This programme will be delivered in a series of four seminars presented by leaders in the field of workforce planning. The first seminar included case studies from around the world, and touch on key priorities for primary care health systems in the wake of COVID-19. The meeting was chaired by Professor Simon Gregory and included Niclas Forsling, a project manager at the Centre for Rural Medicine in Sweden, Dr Yoseph Mamo who leads the Chronic Disease Programme in Ethiopia, Cristine Hancock the C3 Collaborating for Health Organisation, and Doctor Katherine Rouleau, a family physician at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and the Vice-Chair of Global Health and Social Accountability in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto who is interested in health equity, and the care of disadvantaged populations in Canada and abroad. Niro spoke on CaHRU’s work with the Royal College of General Practitioners on differential attainment, its causes and potential solutions, work which is helping to ensure a diverse and inclusive primary care workforce.
