Overarching aim This study aimed to investigate the impact of dCBT for insomnia upon health and wellbeing, and will investigate sleep-related changes as mediating factors
Objectives To conduct a randomised controlled trial of fully automated digital Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia versus sleep hygiene education: the impact of improved sleep on functional health, quality of life and psychological wellbeing
Methods Randomised controlled trial (http://www.isrctn.com/ISRCTN60530898)
Outcomes Primary outcomes are functional health and wellbeing at 8 weeks. Secondary outcomes are mood, fatigue, sleepiness, cognitive function, productivity and social functioning.
Outputs Peer reviewed publications, conference presentations and guidelines for digital CBT for insomnia.

Impact This is the first large-scale, specifically designed investigation of the health and wellbeing benefits of CBT for insomnia, and the first causal test of the relationship between CBT-mediated sleep improvement and health status. The study which showed that both insomnia symptoms and overall health improve with an online insomnia program had widespread press coverage.

  1. I see a large number of adolescents with insomnia and early morning wakening and have been looking for a good online CBT program.
