Dr Thusitha Sudarshana started his academic work at the Community and Health Research Unit (CaHRU) in June 2023 as an International Research Fellow. The Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka has awarded a scholarship to Dr Sudarshana as a post graduate trainee in Medical Administration, to join the Community and Health Research Unit and complete his post MD overseas training.
Thusitha is a medical doctor (M.B.B.S.) graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in Sri Lanka in 1997 and started his career in 1998 as a Medical Officer at Deraniyagala District Hospital which is a rural hospital in a hilly tea plantation area of the country. He completed his Master’s Degree (MSc) in Medical Administration at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) University of Colombo in 2005 and thereafter he was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Lady Ridgway Hospital for Children Colombo in the same year. Thusitha had the opportunity to work in ten leading hospitals in the country as a medical manager including the North Colombo Teaching Hospital before he was appointed as the Deputy Director of Medical Supplies Division (MSD) Ministry of Health which is the premium institution supplying medicines to 2400 health institutions in the country. Thusitha worked as the Director of MSD in 2019 and 2022. Thusitha obtained his doctoral qualification (MD) in Medical Administration in 2016 from the PGIM University of Colombo and he was trained in the Office of the Deputy Director General (MSD) and the Director office of National Respiratory Disease Hospital.
Thusitha would like to explore the structure and management of healthcare quality, pre hospital care services and safety strategies with emphasis on clinical audit in the UK and their applicability to Sri Lanka’s health system. Thusitha is also looking forward to learn more about conducting Systematic Reviews and Qualitative Research under the supervision of Professor Niro Siriwardena and his team.
More about Dr Thusitha in addition to his medical career: he is a veteran vocalist, lyrics writer, and a music composer who has produced his own one hundred original Sinhalese songs during the past ten years. He is the only medical professional in Sri Lanka who has created duets with eight Sri Lankan veteran female singers including the great Nanda Malini.
